Kitchen Cabinets – Considerations

Kitchen Cabinets

There are various options available when it comes to making a decision on the manufacturer of your new kitchen cabinets. To a certain extent, your budget will determine the method of construction and choice of materials when it comes to selecting a cabinet type. Material choices are varied and range from lower cost particle board up to high-end hardwoods. Budget is clearly one factor, but also your longer range plan for the home in general. Do you intend to remain at your location for many years to come? or are you making preparations for a house move sometime in the foreseeable future? These are some of the many things to consider when looking around for new kitchen cabinets.

The actual kitchen cabinets are at the forefront of most people’s minds when it comes to considering a kitchen remodel, since clearly, one of the top reasons for remodeling a kitchen is the aesthetic facelift that comes from adding new cabinets.  So for most people the styling is crucial and is the number one consideration when planning a kitchen redesign.
But it isn’t just the styling of your kitchen and its new aesthetic that should be considered at length. Functional aspects are important too, and a kitchen remodel is the perfect opportunity to extract the maximum from the space available, utilizing the modern cabinets and accessories available on the current market.
Generally speaking between 50 and 60 percent of an average kitchen’s cost is attributed to the cost of the cabinets. This varies depending on the nature of the project. Obviously, in situations which call for extensive structural work, the labor cost might be higher than the actual cost of kitchen cabinets, but as a general rule of thumb, most of your investment will be tied up in the actual cabinetry cost.

modern kitchen cabinetsBut how do you go about picking the ideal style for your space? In many respects it’s a lot like trying to critique a piece of art, or music. It’s difficult to tell another person what looks good and what fits their idea for ‘aesthetically appealing’. But it’s important to visualize your new cabinets within the actual space of your home. It’s fine looking at color brochures and websites, but how will your favored style look within the constraints of the rest of your home?

Soliciting the opinion of a professional kitchen designer / planner is often a good idea, and many will offer free basic planning and advice, particularly if you’re in the market for cabinets or accessories which they happen to supply.

A good kitchen designer will help you maximize the value the new kitchen adds to the overall value of your home. He or she will help you avoid going for a style which presents a visual clash with other aspects of your home style.

Kitchen Door Samples

It’s always a good idea to obtain samples of doors – take a look at and compare wood types and laminate finishes and hold them up against your existing cabinets to help your mind form a visual reference for how your new kitchen cabinets might look in the context of your space.

Obviously once you have an idea of the style preference, you’re going to need to measure the space carefully. This stage of the process needs to be carried out with extreme care, as failure to do so can lead to expensive mistakes. It’s important to check and double check your measurements, not just for the cabinetry but for counter tops, appliances, sinks and faucets. When measuring the space, be sure to consider the opening aspect of appliances and cabinet doors. Many appliances such as fridges and dishwashers require clearance to the sides to allow the doors to open. You can usually ascertain the required clearance from the design literature which comes with new appliances.

Prior to concluding the measurement steps, see if you can enhance the work flow in your space by altering cabinet and/or appliance positions. This is another task which will benefit from input from a professional kitchen designer. Use this link for a more detailed explanation of planning/measuring for a new kitchen. Remember that adding new kitchen cabinets is an investment in your home, if the project is completed professionally and competently it will almost certainly add value to your property.

At the end of the remodel you should continue your relationship with your supplier and learn how best to care for your new kitchen cabinets so they’ll provide a lifetime’s worth of enjoyment and hold the value they’ve added to your home. Basic care and maintenance is important to retain the functional and aesthetic character of the new cabinets over a prolonged period. This is a free guide for Planning a New Kitchen.

Construction and Installation contractors for new kitchen cabinets

In addition to kitchen cabinets you may also be considering adding new cabinetry to bathrooms and utility rooms. In this case it’s always a good idea to try to coordinate the styling throughout the home. If that’s your goal then naturally you’re going to want to choose a manufacturer that can accommodate your multi-room needs. Not all kitchen cabinet manufacturers have standard cabinetry for other rooms in the home, so shop around for the right supplier to suit your needs. GoodLife Kitchens are authorized dealers for KraftMaid, who offer multi-room coordinated cabinets, along with Merillat, who offer the same at a lower price point.

Cabinet Pricing

As discussed above, buying new kitchen cabinets and remodeling your kitchen space will add value to your home. But you don’t want that added value to fall off sharply as the cabinets age. So choosing a quality construction is important, particularly if you plan to remain in your home for the foreseeable future. For most situations we recommend KraftMaid Cabinets as our preferred manufacturer, and we can offer you their cabinets at pricing lower than any other supplier in the San Francisco Bay area.
